Judging by your spelling of ‘stories,’ no.

if you love writing, then it is. Listen to yourself – people will always give you pros and cons for going into writing, at the end, you know what you love. If you love it enough, you can create a place for yourself because your passion will attract clients (if you learn how to show your passion in your portfolios etc). Good luck!

Okay, so I am still in college….2 years into my four year degree. I am majoring in English and am interest in freelance writing as a career option. Should I wait till I am through college to pursue this job? I want clients to take me seriously and recognize my talent. When you say “writing samples” do you mean previous job writing experience ( like work put in the paper or on a web site) because until I get a job I don’t have “samples” like that, just general writing i have done on my own.

Well, obviously Iam always in favor of new writers (unlike some writers) so its good that you are entertaining writing for a living.
However, it depends on what kind of wriitng you intend to do.
Apparently, you intend to be a journalist.
Keep in mind that with the closure of a number of dailies across the country and the shift to webbased journalism with some of these papers that newspapers are going through rough times.
My suggestion would be to freelance as well.

      19. rickangelsfan27 February 2, 2013 at 9:56 am #

i am a new student in college and have been told by many teachers to pursue writing. (i’m good) in your opinion, do you see this as a good career option to pursue? (btw i’m thinking of writing for a newspaper)

      21. MultiSmartass1 February 2, 2013 at 10:40 am #

As my post above indicates, I do freelance.
        Any other questions?

      22. SkitterMarks February 2, 2013 at 10:47 am #

don’t mean to be rude.. but do u freelance write for a living?

      23. MultiSmartass1 February 2, 2013 at 11:36 am #

I have been a freelancer and writer for 15 years and I have never had a website and I have been able to get work.

I don’t think having a website automatically equals work unless you are writing out of state and nationally. Since I work largely locally, I like to meet with editors if possible and show them my work.

However, Iam considering putting up my resume and clips at some site since work has slowed to a crawl this year for me, the biggest drought of my career thus far.

If the orchid part of your letter was factual and not fictional, we have a lot in common. Love your videos- keep it up!

The query letter she reads here is very basic. Something out of a book.

I recommend to freebies ( my pet name for freelancer since people always think they can get you for free) a more specific approach.

if you are pitching to a magazine, mention your idea and include a sample paragraph of what the article might be like if written. This way the editor gets a sense of your writing style and what the article might be like.
This has been tips from the smartass. Take Care.

If you can write at a 9th grade level, you could easily earn a full time income writing online. Companies are desperately looking for entry level writers. I’ve written tons of query letters to columnists, and managing editors of newspaper opinion sections, only to receive an unsupportive response. Any advice for someone who wants to be a ediotiral-columnist?
